Survey has been done in Azad Kashmir (Havailan). There are many houses which were completely destroyed due to rains and landslides. No aid has reached these victims yet as there is no road access (and thus no publicity) KEF Relief volunteer was the only person to visit them on foot to collect the data. Depending on resources of reconstruction for AJK, KEF will try and take up the challenge of assisting them.

KEF Relief visited Nowshehra with doctors’ team of DMA who were working in KPK (formally NWFP). This visit was to asses the damage.

Ms. Pharmagen donated 40 tons of mineral water. At that time there was acute shortage of clean drinking water. We were able to airlift water with the help of Air Force who provided C-130 (Cargo Airplanes). 30 tons of water was air lifted to D.G Khan (Punjab) and Jackababad (Sindh) where with the assistance of Army KEF Reliefwas able to distribute water and ready to eat rations. KEF Relief procured dry rations, packed and distributed them in KPK, Ration kits and mineral water was also distributed with the help of NUST, Army, IOM and KEF Volunteers to KPK.

Initially KEF Relief “adopted” two streets (80 households) in near Nowshera. KEF is assisting these families by providing them food, clothing bedding and all items required for rehabilitation.. In the first phase basic essentials like water, ration and clothing was provided. Prior to distribution, lists with identifications were made of the affecties with priority to most deserving families. The number of households that KEF Relief support in that area was over 400.

40 pallets of relief goods were airlifted by KEF-UK for Islamabad. The tedious process of sorting, packing and distribution started immediately and is still continuing. This consignment consisted of medical equipments and clothing.

100 ration kits of 35kg each were sent and distributed in Skardu (Northern Areas) rain and flood affected areas and 10 kits were sent to Batkhaila.

Survey was carried out by KEF Relief volunteers in Charsada and Nowshera (KPK). Ration kits and clothing was distributed to 475 families in Charsada.

Most needy white collared victims including lawyers who could neither stand in queues nor force themselves to collect were especially by KEF Relief and a separate distribution was done for them at lawyer chamber in Charsada.

475 ration kits were distributed with the help of KEF Relief and local volunteers in Nowshera.

Ration, clothing and tents were sent to Shahar Sultan Muzaffargarh (Punjab) for about 20 families. These were the most neglected families as they did not receive Government assistance (watan cards) as they do not own any land holdings.

Ø Due to insufficient funds the KEF’s relief activates have been limited to consolidating on 80 families that we are supporting in Noweshara.

Ø KEF had representation in IOM’s Multan hub which is essential to be able to get UN and international agencies assistance.

Ø A truck load of bedding material along with food rations was delivered to Noweshara.

Ø KEF received 10 ton of supplies (clothing and medical equipment) from UK – courtesy Raja Hanif & KEF UK, more supplies are expected.

Ø We are in desperate need of tents, if anyone wants to assist us in this area the more economical procurement and transportation is from China.

Ø We have been pledged food worth approximately Rs. 2.5 million which we plan to distribute in the next few days.

KEF (www.kefintl.org) continues to make its modest effort to the flood relief with its limited financial resources. It has joined hands with other organisations like College of Engineering and the army to supply relief essentials.

19^th August – KEF supplied 6 tons of mineral water (donated by Pharmagen Medical Services Limited) to Northern Sindh.

21^st August – KEF reached the remotest parts in Southern Punjab with 12 tons of mineral water. In addition KEF distributed Rs. 100,000 worth of dry rations in the area.

25^th August – KEF joined assisted College of Engineering, Risalpur in KP (formally NWFP) which is supplying two meals a day to 10,000 people. KEF supplied 3,600 litres of mineral water.

28^th August – KEF reached a remote village Zamma Khel in Nowshera district and supplied and distributed rations to 70 families (of five) for one week. 800 litres of mineral water, shoes and clothing. Transport was provided with the courtesy of IOM (www.iom.int) .

KEF Flood Relief - Situation Report (August 20, 2010)

KEF has reached the remotest and the neediest today, here is the situation report till today (20^th Aug., 2010). With the help of PA, Zakir Habib (KEF volunteer) took a plane load of 12 tons of mineral water to DG Khan where it was distributed with the support of the Pakistan Army.

This is the first relief flight to this most affected area. DG Khan is half way down in Pakistan and in southern Punjab. The water was first trucked from Lahore to Rawalpindi and then flown to DG Khan.

It was further distributed to the most devastated areas of tehsil Jampur (dist Rajanpur) and surrounding areas including Kot Mithan (5 km south of Jampur) and Kotla Mughlan (3 km south west of Jampur) union councils. (See attached pictures).

In addition dry rations packets for one hundred families were also distributed to stranded people in Kotla Mughlan and Jampur areas through helicopters.

Yesterday 6 tons of mineral water was also transported to Jacobabad through one C 130 and distributed amongst people who did not have access to drinking water in this scorching heat.

Same quantity of water and clothes were also transported by road to District Nowshera in KP (formally NWFP) and surroundings areas today.

KEF Flood Relief Appeal

Unfortunately Pakistan has been hit by another major disaster in a period of less than five years – the first being the tragic earthquake of 2005 and then in 2009 the displacement of people from Swat. Once again Pakistan is under precarious conditions in KP, Punjab, AK, and Sindh due to heavy floods. Although the loss of life has not been as high as the previous two disasters, the amount of damage, destruction, and impending diseases is more than the earthquake in Pakistan, tsunami and the recent Hattie earthquake (as quoted by UN). As I write this people are still stranded on roofs without food and water.

KEF is being asked again by KEF friends, donors and other organisations to come to the relief of people whose life is in danger by the shortage of food and impending diseases and to provide them with basic needs of drinking water, food and medicine. The KEF Board of Trustee’s have agreed to come to the national assistance. Unfortunately there is trust deficit this time between the donors and the government so it is organisations and people like us who have to assist the victims of the floods.

There is an area near D.G. Khan that has been cut off by road and rail, figures collected by KEF today for just one district Jampur (near DG Khan) show that out of a total population of 281,000, there are 156,500 people displaced and – 21,100 houses completely destroyed and 37,300 partially damaged. These figures are typical in most of flood affected areas. The figures that are being quoted are that over 40 million people are displaced and more floods are expected.

KEF is making arrangements with the Air Force and Army to fly relief supplies to southern Punjab, where we have made arrangements for transparent distribution. In addition we plan to supply relief goods to Nowshera in KP (formally NWFP).

KEF is once again being requested by a large number of KEF’s donors and others who are familiar with KEF’s work during the Earthquake of 2005 and in the field of quality education in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir and are also desirous of channelling their aid for the relief of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) from the unfortunate conflict in NWFP & FATA through KEF. The Foundation has decided to extend a helping hand in this matter.

KEF has established a team of its senior workers to identify and reach out to the victims and provide them immediate and appropriate relief.

The team is:

2) Mrs. Talat Farooq

3) Dr. Amjad Iqbal (from Swat)

They will be assisted by Vice Admiral (R) Farooq Rasheed, Chairman KEF who will also be the Chief Coordinator of the programme.

The main objectives are:

a) To identify affected needy groups of displaced families

b) To mobilise local manpower teams and provide provisions and other essential commodities.

c) To provide any other assistance needed by the displaced families which KEF can organise.

KEF Students Achieve Outstanding Result in Federal Board Examinations

July 5th 2006: Students of the pilot project of the Kashmir Education Foundation (KEF), the Pearl Valley Public School (PVPS) in Rawalakot have achieved outstanding results in the Federal Board Of Matriculate Examinations by securing first position out of all schools registered with the Federal Government Board in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) district. Of the 17 students representing KEF's Pearl Valley Public School, 14 have secured A+ grades, while 3 have secured A grades in the matriculation examinations. On the whole, PVPS students have maintained a high class average of 84%, hence reinforcing the Kashmir Education Foundation's core belief that once given the opportunity, children belonging to impoverished classes can achieve great milestones if motivated well and imparted high quality education backed with state of the art facilities .

High achievers amongst this talented batch of KEF students include Momil Nazir who has secured second position in the AJK district with 960 marks and Taqdees Abrar who has obtained 959 marks, thus securing third position within the district. These students represent the second batch of matriculate students to graduate from The Pearl Valley Public School, which has maintained the unique distinction that all PVPS students, appearing for their matric examination since the last two years have secured 'A' or higher grades in the Federal Board examination.

Located in the Khirick village of Rawalakot, The Pearl Valley Public School- launched as a pilot project of The Kashmir Education Foundation in 1996, has opened new doors of opportunity for children representing the underprivileged strata of society. Islamabad March 8th 2006: Kashmir Education Foundation organized a special visit to the Soan Valley Pakhowal Complex in Bisali for representatives from the media today. This visit was organized in an effort to highlight the impressive progress that the children belonging to the rural areas have made after receiving education from the Soan Valley Public School built within the Pakhowal Complex, the facilities and standard of which are currently at par with any quality private school existing in the world.

Offering limitless opportunities for advancement to talented children belonging to underprivileged families in the rural communities around Basali village, the Soan Valley Public School is located at a distance of 30 kilometers from Islamabad/Rawalpindi. Apart from the Soan Valley Public school, the Pakhowal Complex of the Kashmir Education Foundation also includes a purpose built Institute of Teacher's Education with a hostel facility, which has been designed specifically to train teachers and inculcate within them the highest level of skills needed to impart quality education.

Commenting on their mission, Maj Gen (Retd) M. Rahim Khan, Chairman of the Kashmir Education Foundation shared his views stating, "Pakistan cannot possibly compete in the 21st century with anybody, unless our vast talent pool of human resource, which has always been condemned to highly sub-standard education is also enabled to have access to quality education" He further added that by making the highest standard of education accessible to the vulnerable and particularly the female population, Kashmir Education Foundation is currently focusing on the development of the brightest children from rural areas in the hope of creating role models within their communities while enabling them to compete successfully in the leadership stakes with children from the elite schools.

Moreover, a formal briefing was also conducted by Air Marshal Aftab Raja, Principal Pearl Valley Public School, Joan Atkinson, a renowned British Educationalist who is presently heading the Institute of Teacher Education and Brig Tariq Mahmood, the CEO of KEF regarding the quality of education and all future projects of the foundation. Joan Atkinson who had earlier served with the foundation as the founding principal of Pearl Valley Public School and Pioneer Director of Institute of Teacher's Education, Rawalakot said that the quality of education in the KEF Institutions can be compared with the best in the world. There are four other Master Trainers presently on the faculty of The Institute Of Teacher Education and the pedagogy skills imparted to the trainee teachers would most certainly transform them into top quality teachers for English medium primary schools.

Members of The Kashmir Education Foundation further disclosed that the foundation intends to set up two more talent schools in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan within the next two to three years. In addition, the foundation also intends to establish an Institute of Teacher Education to train subject specialists for secondary and higher secondary schools.

CMH Rawalakot, which was completely destroyed in the October 8 earthquake, is currently the only functional medical facility in Rawalakot. With the first snow in Rawalakot in the first week of January, the temporary shelters of Jordanian Field Hospital and many others collapsed in Combined Military Hospital (CMH), leaving hundreds of patients, their attendents and medical equipment in grave danger.

KEF responded to the emergency immediately, installing their shelters for Jordanian Field Hospital and for CMH Rawalakot within 48 hours. Two shelters were combined to create a 60x12 shelter for Jordanian Field Hospital. At present, 7 more standard shelters were also installed for the CMH.

KEF applies for ERRA registration

KEF Board of Trustees Meeting - December 10, 2005

KEF Board of Trustees meeting was held at KEF Head Office on Saturday, December 10, 2005. The Trustees were briefed on the relief and rehabilitation work done by KEF over the past two months. The Board commended the work and unanimously decided to continue it as long as possible. The Board also agreed that KEF would be involved in the next phase of rehabilitation and relief.

It was decided during the Board meeting to immediately start work on the establishment of Institute of Teacher Education for Secondary level teachers in the proximity of Pakhowal complex. In the interim period, the Trustees decided to undertake a feasibility study of running classes for core subjects i.e. Maths, English, Science and IT in the vacant space of Soan Valley Public School.

The Board commended the Principal PVPS and the faculty for the outstanding results in the Matric Exam.

"Across the provincial border into Azad Kashmir, the Kashmir Education Foundation has a similar advantage. The foundation runs the Pearl Valley School in Rawalakot that is staffed primarily by trained, local teachers. Since the earthquake, the foundation has relied on its local contact base to manage the construction of semi-permanent shelters across the Rawalakot area. To date, 760 shelters have been set up, their gleaming steel roofs dotting a trail across the 5,000 feet and higher villages where they have been built....."

Fund-raiser for Earthquake affectees - Walk around Willen Lake, Milton Keynes

As forecast by the weather pundits, the morning of Saturday, December 3, turned out to be cloudy but relatively bright. Today was the sponsored walk-in aid of earthquake relief for which the organising committee had worked hard at finding sponsors. On arrival at the venue, by the cafeteria at Willen Lake, Milton Keynes, the cloud cover had become a tad heavier but it did not, to quote a cliché, dampen the spirits of the participants. The people trickled in by the appointed time, 11:00 AM. Handing out the green ribbon to all participants, it was calculated that around 50 people, including children had turned out. Given the weather conditions, this was a major achievement and hats off to all who attended. This showed their commitment and dedication to the cause. By the time the walk started at 11:10, the heavens had opened up. So after a quick group photograph, they were off on the first of two laps, anti-clockwise on the path around Willen Lake. The rain had become heavier and the wind picked up, increasing the wind chill considerably, as anyone who was not wearing gloves and a hat would testify. The only other people (non-participants I might add ) at the lake were in the cafeteria enjoying a hot cup of coffee. There was also the odd jogger going about his morning run. A few participants were performing child minding duties for younger children who could not walk the roughly 3 miles around the lake. The only other living thing at the lake were a couple of water skiers ( in this cold, I thought ?) and a number of swans and ducks.

The first ones to return were the young boys, who shouted we are first. Too late, I thought, as nobody had thought of some gifts or trivia to hand out to the kids who did the walk. Within 50 minutes all the walkers had completed the first lap. And they were off for the second after a breather. By now the weather had improved, with the rain petering out and the sky brightening up. Half way through the lap, the sun was breaking through the clouds and soon after the lap was completed, it completely broke through. By this time, everybody was in the cafeteria having a breather, a hot cup of tea and exchanging jokes. It was opportunity to meet many other families who live around Milton Keynes.

More importantly, the event raised around £3,500 approximately. This is by no means final and will grow as all the committee members have to finalise their collections by December 14. It is expected to top the £4000 mark. All funds will be given to KEF's Earthquake Relief and Rehabilitation plan.

All in all, a good effort by all the ladies doing the organisation. Thank you all for your time and efforts in making this a success given the short time that was available in coming up with the idea and organising it.

Going around the lake in waterproof and warm clothing and a warm home to return to afterwards, I could still feel the bitter chill of the winter wind and the rain, and could not help but think about the earthquake affectees who had nothing left and had to try and survive in even colder temperatures. Let us hope and pray that the money raised will go some way in alleviating their plight.

University of Gloucestershire join hands with KEF

Continuing the strong relationship, the University of Gloucestershire has joined hands with KEF to provide relief to the earthquake victims.

"Following the recent earthquake in Pakistan & Kashmir, we will be raisingfunds in order to support the school and the community it serves which has been devastated by this disaster in and around Rawalakot district. More than 90% of the houses are destroyed and rendered unsafe. The school building is being utilised as a relief camp for theose who have survived.

The Pearl Valley School in Rawalakot has a strong link with Education here at Gloucestershire. The UoG with personal support of the Vice Chancellor Dame Janet Trotter has been associated with the KEF project for a number of years now. The chairman KEF, Gen Rahim Khan has visited the UoG to meet & discuss developments." .......

KEF has provided over 600 shelters - 400 more in next week

Kashmir Education Foundation has provided over 600 shelters, mostly in Rawalakot area for the earthquake affectees, while another 400 will be dispatched during the current week.The Foundation plans to set up upto 2000 shelters by mid December subject to availability of funds. It has a capacity to fabricate as many as 200 shelters daily and has developed an efficient logistic set up to deliver these to the affected areas. The project is fully supported by the Army personnel deployed in the area.

It may be added that Kashmir Education Foundation is a charity NGO dedicated to provision of high quality education to the rural children and training of female teachers for English medium school. However, considering the enormity of devastation caused by earthquake, the Foundation launched a relief operation immediately after the earthquake and dispatched hundreds of truck loads of food, blankets, tents and medicines to Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad and Balakot areas.

A sample of shelter developed by the Foundation has been displayed in Chaklala Scheme I, and can be replicated by other NGOs.

Shelter prototype installed in Rawalpindi

KEF has installed a demonstration shelter in Rawaplindi in Chaklala Scheme No. 1. This is for the benefit of other relief agencies who want to replicate the winter shelter in other areas. Structural engineers from civil and army have inspected this and are satisfied that it will withstand the severe conditions weather above the snow line.

The Government of Pakistan have requested KEF today to install a similar demonstration shelter in Islamabad so that other relief agencies can benefit form this design.

Seeing families living in winter shelters gave us one of the greatest satisfactions in life and I am sure it would make the donors proud – It was a pleasure to see the efforts of all KEF volunteers turn into reality.

The work on fabrication of winter shelters and their installation in Rawalakot is continuing. We are pleased to say that our initial program of installing the shelters around Rawalakot has been expanded to cover the whole of Rawalakot District, althoughwe are limited to what we can supply due to lack of funds. Please bear in mind that there are 10,000 houses affected in Rawalakot District – and the best we will be able to do with the pledged funds will be 1000 shelters in the next 20 days, although we have capacity to install 3000.The breakthrough has come due to the Pakistan Army offering their men to take KEF shelters and install them in Rawalakot District – starting from the highest peaks and working their way downwards. In addition the Army is facilitating KEF efforts in Rawalpindi in a big way that has enabled us to increase our capacity to deliver 3000 Shelters.In and around Rawalakot 320 shelters have been supplied/installed and families (about 200) already taken refuge in them. They have made these their home for the time being as you will see in the attached photos.

Citizen Foundation has also pledged KEF 500 of their own shelters for Rawalakot area. In addition World Bank is talking to us to see how they can support us in this effort in the limited time we have after that would be silent deaths due to cold.

KEF on Aaj TV

Aaj TV telecasted a documentary on KEF today (Sunday, November 13, 2005). It focused on the high quality construction standard of Pearl Valley Public School in Rawalakot, preventing it from any damage from the earthquake, and compared it with the other buildings in the Rawalakot area, that suffered catastrophic damage.

The documentary highlighed that before the construction of PVPS began, proper soil analysis was done and the building was constructed against an earthquake of Richter scale 8.0. While the original construction cost increased by nearly 25%, the structures survived the massive earthquake of October 8 without any damage and all of nearly 300 children and staff in the school remained safe.

PVPS Annual Day 2005

Annual function of the PVPS was held on 17th September, 2005. Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Executive Director Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy was the Chief Guest. Senator Dr. Nighat Agha also accompanied the Chief Guest.

The entire function was conducted by the students. Excellent comparing by two students from class 7th and 8th was appreciated by everyone, specially the Chief Guest. The School progress report was also presented by two girl students and was a high point of the function. Trophies and merit certificates were awarded to teachers and students for outstanding performance.

At the end of Prize distribution, Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali commended the KEF and the PVPS for outstanding standard of teaching and management.
